October – November 2014
One of the biggest challenges facing children and youth in the foster care system is educational instability – moving from school to school when they change placements. There are multiple laws that dictate when a foster youth can remain at their current school, even when they change placements, and when they have to change schools, and the factors to be considered in making that decision. The presenters will explain the laws and present fact patterns to help explain how these laws are applied.
There is no fee to attend but pre-registration (by 10/15/14) is required. Space is limited so register early!
Participants who attend this workshop will:
• Understand when foster youth can remain in their current school placements and when they need to change schools
• Understand the education provisions of McKinney/Vento and Fostering Connections
• Understand the factors considered when deciding on a school placement
