On Thursday, June 5, the Senate Appropriations Committee held its full committee markup of the FY 2015 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, which provides $6 million for the Court Appointed Special Advocate program.
During the markup, Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) asked Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) to work with her on increasing CASA funding before the CJS bill goes to the senate floor during the week of June 16.

Dear Senator Mikulski,
Please increase funding for the Department of Justice, Court Appointed Special Advocate program as the FY 2015 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill moves to the Senate floor. With your support, we can expand vital advocacy on behalf of abused and neglected children.
Maryland’s fifteen CASA programs served nearly 1,500 children last year, through the work of 1,250 highly dedicated and highly trained volunteer CASA advocates. Unfortunately, funding constraints allow us to serve less than 15% of the children who need our advocates.
CASA volunteers champion the best interest of the child, ensure that he/she has the services needed to thrive while in care, and work to move the child out of the system into a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible. This is not only the best possible outcome for a child in care, it is also the most efficient use of our limited federal and state resources.
With current resources, we are only able to reach 1/3 of the children nationally in care. Our most vulnerable children need and deserve advocates and CASA is a proven and highly effective solution.
Thank you for your support of CASA funding in FY 2015.
