As the boxes are unpacked, the evaluations are compiled, and the supplies are put away, we look back on our inaugural Foster Youth Summit with sheer enthusiasm and gratitude!
On Saturday, February 28th, 2015 at the University of Maryland School of Social Work in Baltimore, more than thirty older foster youth were able to convene on a common goal: preparing for life after foster care. Attendees began the day with a keynote address from Mr. Rob Levit, an acclaimed musician and artist who created an award-winning innovative “Life Skills Through The Arts” program for hundreds of at-risk youth and adults. Next, youth attendees and their trusted CASA volunteers, social workers, and attorneys alike broke off into workshop sessions where they were presented with information about the various resources available to them including educational, housing, and career options. They then went on to visit the Exhibitor’s Hall where they were given the opportunity to meet representatives from various companies, agencies, and non-profit organizations and learn more about the resources available to them. At the end of the day, everyone gathered, thank you’s were said, and prizes were distributed to a few of the youth who visited all of the Exhibitors.
This event was an absolute pleasure for us to plan and carry out. We will soon begin planning for next year’s summit and plan to make it an even bigger success!
Thank you to our generous sponsors!
Maryland CASA would like to extend a huge thank you to our sponsors for our first annual Youth Summit! Through their generous support, all youth participants were able to attend at no cost of their own and were given additional resources to help ease their transition into independent living!
